BASICS OF MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT

You must have original medicare

Typically, you must have Medicare Part A and Part B before buying Medicare Supplement.

Open enrollment

Open enrollment for Medicare Supplement lasts for 6 months and starts the first month when you get Medicare Part B and you are at least 65 years old or older.

During this period, you can enroll in any Medicare Supplement policy and an insurance company cannot deny you coverage because of pre-existing health conditions.
After the 6-month period ends, you cannot buy a Medicare Supplement policy – or it can cost more.
The Medicare Supplement open enrollment period is a one-time enrollment, it does not repeat every year.

what does medicare supplement cover and not cover?

IT COVERS OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS

Medicare Supplement helps pay 20% of medical expenses with Part A and B of Medicare Original covering 80% of it. Medicare Supplement helps cover copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

what does it not cover?

Medicare Supplement does not cover long-term care like hospice, vision or dental care, or hearing aids.

You can enroll in a separate Part D Medicare plan to cover prescription drug costs, as Medicare Supplement plans after 2005 do not cover prescription drugs.
